Naples Street Photography Workshop
During this six-day workshop, we will explore the historic heart of Naples and several of its most distinctive neighbourhoods. We will work with observation, timing, composition, light and visual storytelling, while helping each participant develop a more personal and confident photographic approach.
The workshop will be led by photographers Bjørn Joachimsen and Terje Svendsen. Participants will work in small groups, allowing for close guidance and individual tuition throughout the week.
We will stay at a centrally located hotel, which will serve as both our accommodation and workshop base. Five nights’ accommodation and breakfast will be included in the workshop price.

Street Photography, Daily Reviews and Editing
This workshop combines intensive street photography with a strong emphasis on image review and development.
Most mornings will be spent photographing while Naples comes to life. We will explore different neighbourhoods, respond to changing light and activity, and work on individual and group assignments.
Each afternoon, we will return to the hotel for an extensive review and editing session. These sessions will be a defining part of the workshop—not simply an optional activity at the end of the day.

Improving composition and visual structure
Building coherent stories and short photographic series
Developing an efficient editing workflow
Processing images in Adobe Lightroom
Making more advanced adjustments in Adobe Photoshop
Working with colour, contrast and black-and-white interpretation
Preparing photographs for print, presentation or online use
Individual feedback and personal photographic development
Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop with Lightroom and Photoshop installed. The guidance will be adapted to each participant’s experience and ambitions.
Why Photograph Naples?
Wonderfully situated in a natural amphitheatre beneath Mount Vesuvius, Naples is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. It was founded by the Greeks and later developed under Roman, Norman, French, Spanish and Bourbon rule.
The city’s historic centre—the largest in Europe—is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ancient street plan, churches, palaces, markets and densely layered everyday life make it an extraordinary environment for photographers.
Naples has attracted travellers and artists for centuries. During the era of the Grand Tour, painters created pictures of its streets, landscapes and people for visitors to take home. As photographers, we follow a long visual tradition while responding to the energy and contradictions of the contemporary city.

The areas we will explore
The final programme will remain flexible, allowing us to respond to weather, light, local events and photographic opportunities. Our principal locations will include the following areas.
The Historic Centre
The historic centre contains the core of more than 2,700 years of Neapolitan history. Its ancient Greek street plan is still visible, surrounded by buildings made from local volcanic tuff.
Small chapels, richly decorated churches, workshops, cafés and family businesses appear throughout the narrow streets. Historic architecture and contemporary street life exist side by side, offering opportunities to work with people, details, urban layers and visual contrasts.
Forcella
Forcella is one of the most distinctive parts of the historic centre. Its narrow streets contain small shops, workshops, bars, pizzerias and miniature markets. Washing lines cross overhead, while domestic life frequently extends from buildings into the street.
The neighbourhood combines an intense, everyday atmosphere with monumental buildings, beautiful churches and centuries-old living spaces. Its extraordinary visual character has also made it a favourite location for filmmakers.
Sanità
Sanità was once a Roman burial area and later became an elegant district for the Neapolitan aristocracy, as seen in its impressive palaces.
Over time, it developed into a densely populated working-class neighbourhood. Today, its markets, courtyards, narrow alleys, historic buildings and lively streets make it one of the city’s most rewarding areas for street photography.
The Spanish Quarter
The Spanish Quarter was built in the 16th century to accommodate Spanish troops. Its distinctive grid of steep, narrow streets has developed into one of the liveliest parts of Naples.
Washing hangs from balconies, scooters pass through crowded streets, and residents gather outside cafés, shops and homes. The neighbourhood is full of movement, colour and human interaction, making it ideal for working with timing, layered compositions and close observation.
Montecalvario and Spaccanapoli
Montecalvario lies next to the Spanish Quarter and marks the beginning of Spaccanapoli—the long, straight street that appears to cut through the centre of Naples.
From the streets leading towards Vomero and Castel Sant’Elmo, we can experience a different view of the city. Higher viewpoints reveal the dense urban landscape, with Spaccanapoli dividing the centre and Mount Vesuvius rising beyond it.
This area provides opportunities to work with both intimate street scenes and broader views of Naples within its dramatic natural setting.
San Ferdinando and the waterfront
San Ferdinando presents a more elegant and monumental side of Naples. The district includes Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace and Teatro di San Carlo, one of Europe’s oldest opera houses.
Nearby, Galleria Umberto I, Castel dell’Ovo and the waterfront offer strong architectural forms, open public spaces and views across the Bay of Naples. The area allows us to work with scale, geometry, silhouettes and the relationship between people and architecture.

Is This Workshop Right for You?
Participants may work with digital or analogue cameras. The workshop is suitable for photographers with different levels of experience, although you should understand the basic operation of your camera.
A small and supportive group
The workshop will have a maximum of 12 participants.
For many of the street sessions, we will divide into two smaller groups of no more than six participants, each working with one instructor. This gives everyone space to photograph independently while still receiving close attention and guidance.
The group itself is an important part of the workshop. We will learn from one another’s pictures, exchange ideas and share the pleasures and challenges of photographing in a complex city.
We also plan to arrange informal group dinners at selected restaurants. Participation will be optional, and meals will be paid for individually unless otherwise stated.
Day 1 (March 30)
Arrival and introduction
Participants arrive and check in at the hotel. In the afternoon, we will meet for introductions, present the programme and discuss practical and ethical considerations when photographing in Naples.
The day will conclude with an introductory photo walk and an informal group dinner
Day 2 (March 31):
The Historic Centre and Forcella
Morning photography in the historic centre and Forcella, concentrating on observation, backgrounds, composition and anticipating activity.
During the afternoon session, we will establish an efficient Lightroom workflow and review the first photographs from the workshop.
Day 3 (April 1):
Sanità
Morning photography in Sanità, working with people, neighbourhood life, visual layers and environmental portraits.
The afternoon will be devoted to image selection, individual feedback and Lightroom development. An optional evening session will explore photography in low light.
Day 4 (April 2):
The Spanish Quarter and Montecalvario
Morning photography in the Spanish Quarter and Montecalvario, with an emphasis on timing, movement, complex compositions and working confidently in busy streets.
In the afternoon, we will examine how to develop a photographic idea across several images. We will also demonstrate selected Photoshop techniques.
Day 5 (April 3):
San Ferdinando and the waterfront
Photography around San Ferdinando, Piazza del Plebiscito, Galleria Umberto I and the waterfront. We will explore architecture, geometry, public spaces and the relationship between people and their surroundings.
The afternoon session will focus on refining individual projects and preparing a short photographic series. A final optional evening shoot may be arranged.
Day 6 (April 4):
Final edit and presentation
The final morning will provide an opportunity to revisit a location, complete an assignment or work independently with guidance from the instructors.
After lunch, participants will make their final selections and prepare a short series of approximately five to eight photographs. The workshop will conclude with a group presentation and discussion.
The precise finishing time will be confirmed before participants are advised to book their return travel
Ambitions & Goals
This workshop is about helping you grow as a photographer through the everyday life of Naples.
In the streets, we help you slow down, observe and make more deliberate photographic decisions. That might mean finding a stronger background, simplifying a busy scene, working with light and shadow, waiting for a gesture, or becoming more comfortable photographing people respectfully.
Whether street photography is new to you or already part of your practice, we encourage you to experiment and develop your own way of seeing. The skills you practise—observation, timing, composition and visual storytelling—can strengthen many other areas of your photography.
Learning continues during our daily image reviews and Lightroom and Photoshop sessions. Through constructive feedback, thoughtful selection and editing, you will explore what makes an image work and how individual photographs can come together as a coherent series.
With two instructors and a small group, you receive personal guidance throughout the workshop. Our goal is that you return home with photographs you are proud of, greater confidence and practical skills you can use wherever you photograph next.

Bjørn is a versatile photographer with over 20 years of professional experience across genres including people, nature, and architecture. He is one of Norway’s most active photography instructors, teaching nationwide and internationally. His collaborations include Sandra Bartocha, Anna Ulmestrand, Otto von Münchow, and David Beckstead (USA).

Terje is a full-time Norwegian photographer specializing in landscapes and cityscapes. He leads workshops in Paris, Italy, and the Dolomites, and knows Naples well from previous workshops there. His work is showcased through exhibitions and available as fine art prints.

A typical day combines street photography in Naples with dedicated time for image reviews and editing:

Most people join solo. We keep a friendly, supportive atmosphere, and you’ll quickly feel part of the group.

We explore Naples mainly on foot, spending several hours in the streets each day. The pace is relaxed, with stops to photograph and take breaks. Expect:
Several kilometres of walking on most days
Uneven paving, narrow streets and occasional stairs
Some slopes and steeper streets, particularly around the Spanish Quarter and Montecalvario
We return to the hotel for afternoon image reviews and editing sessions. You should be comfortable walking while carrying your camera equipment. Comfortable shoes and a lightweight camera bag make a big difference.

Rain and moody weather can create excellent opportunities for street photography in Naples. Wet streets, reflections, umbrellas and changing light offer a different atmosphere and new ways to capture everyday life.
We adapt the programme with:
Street photography that makes use of rain, reflections and dramatic light
Sheltered locations and covered spaces where practical
Flexible timing to make the most of breaks in the weather
Image reviews and editing sessions at the hotel when conditions make outdoor photography difficult
Bring a waterproof jacket and rain protection for your camera. We’ll make the most of the conditions while keeping the group’s comfort and safety in mind.

Street photography offers something for every level, and this workshop welcomes enthusiastic beginners through to advanced photographers. No previous street photography experience is needed.
You should understand the basic operation of your camera, but you don’t need to be an expert. We adapt our guidance to your experience, whether you’re learning to capture everyday moments or refining your timing, compositions and visual storytelling.
With two instructors and a small group, you’ll receive personal support both in the streets and during image reviews and editing sessions.

Yes — you’re welcome to bring a partner or spouse.
Partners are welcome to join the outdoor photo sessions as an observer and enjoy the locations with the group. However, coaching and tutoring are for registered participants only, and we’ll prioritize instruction time for the photographers on the workshop.

For street photography in Naples, a lightweight, comfortable setup works best. Bring:
Camera: A DSLR or mirrorless camera you’re comfortable using
Versatile lens: A zoom such as a 24–105mm or equivalent is a practical choice, covering wider street scenes, everyday moments and tighter details. A small 35mm or 50mm prime is also a good option if you prefer travelling light
Extra batteries and memory cards
Laptop with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop installed: Strongly recommended for our daily image reviews and editing sessions
Card reader and external storage or another backup solution
Small, comfortable camera bag
Comfortable walking shoes
Clothing for variable spring weather: Layers, a waterproof jacket and rain protection for your camera
Phone, charger and power bank: Useful for maps and staying in touch with the group
