EXPERIENCE CROATIA THROUGH YOUR CAMERA

There is something special about photographing Croatia in spring.

The days are becoming longer, the coastal towns are coming to life, and the harsh heat and busiest part of the tourist season are still ahead. Pale limestone buildings reflect the changing light, fishing boats move through the harbours and daily life unfolds in streets shaped by centuries of history.

This workshop is not about rushing from one famous viewpoint to the next.

We will give ourselves time to explore, observe and respond to what is happening around us. Some photographs may come from grand landscapes and historic architecture. Others may be found in a quiet doorway, a reflection in polished stone, a conversation in a market or a single figure moving through a narrow street.

With two instructors, we can offer close personal guidance while allowing every participant the freedom to develop an individual style.

WHY CHOOSE THIS WORKSHOP?

Two instructors and personal guidance
The workshop is led by Terje Svendsen and Bjørn Joachimsen. With a maximum of ten photographers, we can divide the group when useful and give each participant individual attention in the field.

Extensive local experience
Bjørn has organised and led photography workshops in Croatia since 2018. His familiarity with the towns, landscapes and local conditions allows us to spend less time searching and more time photographing.

A varied photographic programme

  • During one week, you will work with:

  • * Historic architecture

  • * Street and travel photography

  • * Coastal landscapes

  • * Fishing villages and harbours

  • * Waterfalls and woodland

  • * Long exposures

  • * Sunrise, sunset and blue-hour photography

  • * Details, textures and abstract compositions

  • * Visual storytelling

Carefully planned around photography
Our days are organised around the locations, weather and available light. When conditions are promising, we stay longer. When the light is less interesting, we may use the time for lunch, rest, image review or travel to the next location.

A comfortable base
We plan to stay in Vodice, a lively coastal town that gives us convenient access to Šibenik, Zadar, Krka National Park, Split, Trogir and several smaller coastal communities.

Time to develop as a photographer
The aim is not simply to collect photographs from Croatia. We want you to return home with stronger skills, greater confidence and a clearer understanding of how to create meaningful travel photographs wherever you go.

  • You have difficulty walking on cobblestones, stairs or uneven paths

  • You expect every day to follow a fixed timetable regardless of weather and light

  • You prefer a large tour group rather than a small workshop environment

A TYPICAL DAY

The exact schedule will vary according to the weather, season and light, but a typical day may look like this:

Early morning
Optional sunrise or early-morning photography in Vodice, a fishing village or one of the historic towns.

Breakfast

Some days will begin early or finish late. We balance this with later starts, longer meal breaks or free time whenever possible.

DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

DAY 1: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28

Arrival, Ancient Salona and the Streets of Split

We meet participants at Split Airport during the scheduled arrival window.

Our first photography stop is Salona, the ancient Roman city located close to Split. The remains of amphitheatres, basilicas, arches and stone walls provide an excellent introduction to photographing historic architecture, textures and details.

We then continue to Split and explore the streets surrounding Diocletian’s Palace. This is not a preserved historic monument separated from daily life. Homes, cafés, shops and public spaces are woven directly into the ancient structure.

We will look for changing light in the narrow passages, architectural details, people moving through the courtyards and the contrast between ancient stone and modern life.

Later in the afternoon, we travel to Vodice and check into our hotel.

In the evening, we meet for a welcome dinner and introduce the programme for the week.

Photography focus:

  • Ancient architecture

  • Lines, shapes and textures

  • Street photography

  • Working with light and shadow

  • Visual storytelling

    • an afternoon/evening shoot near the new base (and sunrise the next morning)

We share the plan in advance so you always know what’s coming next.

  • Transport between bases and to shooting locations is arranged in comfortable vans, making it easy to reach a wide range of locations without stress. We also plan the logistics so you can focus on photography.

  • This isn’t a hiking-heavy workshop, but some locations do involve short walks or moderate trails. Expect a mix of steps, rocky paths, and gentle inclines. You should feel comfortable carrying your camera gear for short distances.

There’s also an optional hike of about 1.5 hours for anyone who wants to reach more remote viewpoints. It includes moderate elevation changes but offers some of the best photo opportunities of the trip.

  • Mountain weather can change quickly, and we plan for that. If conditions shift, we adapt by:

    • changing locations to match the light and cloud level

    • using forests, lakes, waterfalls, and moody scenes that work well in overcast/rain

    • adjusting timing to shoot during the best windows

You’ll still get strong shooting opportunities. description

  • This workshop works well for enthusiastic beginners through advanced photographers.

You don’t need to be an expert, but it helps if you’re comfortable with basic camera controls (aperture, shutter speed, ISO). We’ll meet you where you are and help you improve your technique and confidence.

If you’re unsure about gear, send us a quick note before departure and we’ll help you pack smart.

  • Yes — you’re welcome to bring a partner or spouse, as long as we have availability (they take up a seat in the vans).

Accommodation for partners is not included. If you’re sharing a room, we’ll invoice the additional cost for double occupancy (the exact amount depends on the room setup at each hotel).

Please let us know at the time of booking so we can reserve the right room arrangement.

The remaining balance will be invoiced about one month before the workshop begins.
