Snow-covered mountains, frozen waterfalls, and the quiet colours of winter twilight. Join us in Hemsedal for a photography workshop exploring the Norwegian winter landscape—from soft morning light to blue hour and photography after dark.

Through practical field sessions, individual coaching, image reviews, and editing guidance, you will learn to photograph winter scenes with greater confidence. We will explore both expansive mountain views and smaller details in snow and ice, paying close attention to composition, exposure, and the changing quality of light.

Our daily locations and timing will follow the weather, snow conditions, and safe access. Night photography sessions will be scheduled for the most suitable evenings.

Workshop focus

Winter offers a different way of seeing the landscape. Snow simplifies a scene, ice creates intricate patterns, and twilight brings subtle colour to mountains and valleys.

The instruction is adapted to your experience and personal goals. During the workshop, we will focus on:

  • Exposing snow correctly while preserving texture and detail

  • Building compositions with winter light, shadows, and negative space

  • Photographing frozen waterfalls and the contrast between ice and flowing water

  • Capturing the colours and atmosphere of blue hour

  • Focusing and composing in low light and after dark

  • Balancing shutter speed, aperture, and ISO for night photography

  • Using tripods and filters effectively

  • Managing batteries and camera equipment in cold conditions

  • Editing winter images with natural colour and controlled highlights

Guidance continues throughout the workshop, with time for questions and individual feedback both in the field and during indoor sessions.

Day 1 (Wednesday February 10):

Arrival and welcome

Arrive in Hemsedal and settle into our privately hosted accommodation.

  • Welcome meeting at 7:30 PM

  • Meet the instructors and fellow participants

  • Introduction to the program and potential photography locations

  • Practical briefing on winter conditions, clothing, and camera preparation

  • Preparation for blue-hour and night photography sessions

The first evening is dedicated to settling in and preparing for the days ahead.

Day 2 (Thursday February 11):

Frozen waterfalls and blue hour

Explore the shapes, textures, and colours of a winter landscape.

  • Morning: Snowy landscapes, exposure, and composition

  • Late morning: Frozen waterfalls and ice formations

  • Early afternoon: Image review, editing, and feedback

  • Sunset and blue hour: Soft light and twilight colours

  • Evening: Guided night photography, weather permitting

Day 3 (Friday, February 12):

Winter landscapes and photography after dark

Develop stronger compositions and explore the atmosphere of the winter night.

  • Optional morning: First light over snowy mountains and valleys

  • Late morning: Snow-covered trees, ice patterns, and winter details

  • Early afternoon: Image review, editing, and feedback

  • Sunset and blue hour: Silhouettes, layers, and winter light

  • Evening: Night photography, with stars if skies are clear

Timing will follow conditions and the group’s needs.

Day 4 (Saturday, February 13):

Winter light and personal projects

Develop your own photographic style with individual guidance.

  • Morning: Winter light, shadows, and snow textures

  • Late morning: Frozen waterfalls, ice details, or forest scenes

  • Early afternoon: Image review, editing, and personal feedback

  • Sunset and blue hour: Winter colours and atmosphere

  • Optional evening: Guided night photography, weather permitting

Day 5 (Sunday, February 14):

Final shoot and wrap-up

Put your new skills into practice and bring your strongest images together.

  • Optional morning shoot: A final opportunity to capture winter morning light

  • Late-morning field session: A location chosen to suit the weather, with coaching tailored to your goals

  • Early-afternoon wrap-up: Final image review, editing discussion, and suggestions for continued practice

  • Workshop ends at 4:00 PM

Ambitions & Goals

Our priority is your photography. The instructors will work closely with you to develop compositions, solve exposure challenges, and make thoughtful decisions in the field.

With no more than six participants per instructor, there is time for personal guidance throughout the workshop. The aim is to help you return home with a collection of winter photographs you are proud of—and the confidence to use these techniques independently.

The shared experience is also part of the workshop: exploring the landscape together, exchanging ideas, and reviewing images in a relaxed setting between outings.

Workshop price: $ 850 per person

The workshop includes:

  • Guided winter landscape photography sessions

  • Two instructors and a maximum of 12 participants

  • Individual instruction in the field

  • Frozen waterfall, blue-hour, and night photography sessions, subject to conditions

  • Image reviews and practical editing guidance

  • Post-workshop online image review sessions

  • Access to a private workshop WhatsApp group

Payment plan:

  • $150 deposit is paid at registration

  • The remaining balance will be invoiced about one month before the workshop begins.

Accommodation:

Accommodation will be arranged through private hosting in Hemsedal, providing a shared base for the workshop.

  • Rate: NOK 300 per person per night

  • Four-night stay, February 10–14: NOK 1 200 per person

  • Accommodation is separate from the $850 workshop fee and invoiced separately.

Meet the Instructors

  • Kristin Devor is a Norwegian photographer based in Hemsedal, just below Skogshorn at nearly 900 meters above sea level. With a lifelong connection to the camera and seven years working full-time, she’s known for capturing both sweeping mountain landscapes and the smallest natural details, often going the extra mile in challenging conditions to get the image.

    She has held several exhibitions in both Hemsedal and Oslo. Her photographs are frequently published in the local newspaper Hallingdølen, and she has received multiple first prizes in photography competitions. Kristin takes on a wide range of assignments (excluding studio work) and is equipped for most photo jobs.

  • Terje is a full-time Norwegian photographer specializing in landscapes and cityscapes. He leads workshops in Paris, Italy, and the Dolomites, and knows Paris particularly well from previous workshops there. His work is showcased through exhibitions and available as fine art prints.

  • We arrange private hosting at NOK 300 per person per night. The four workshop nights total NOK 1,200 per person, charged separately from the workshop fee. You are also welcome to arrange your own accommodation.

    • DSLR or mirrorless camera

    • Wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens

    • Sturdy tripod

    • Remote shutter release, or familiarity with your camera’s self-timer

    • Spare batteries and memory cards

    • Headlamp, preferably with a red-light setting

    • Camera bag with weather protection

    • Lens cloths

    • Optional polarising and ND filters

    • Laptop with editing software for review and editing sessions

    A wide-angle lens with a large maximum aperture is useful for photographing stars (and potentially norther lights), but you do not need one to take part in the workshop.

  • Bring clothing suitable for spending extended periods outdoors in winter:

    • Thermal base layers and warm insulating layers

    • Windproof and waterproof outerwear

    • Warm, insulated winter boots

    • Thick socks, a warm hat, and a neck covering

    • Warm mittens and thinner gloves for operating your camera

    • Traction aids for icy paths

    We will provide further packing guidance before the workshop.

  • We will include night photography in the program. Star photography depends on clear skies; when conditions allow, we will work on including stars above the winter landscape.

  • The program will prioritise locations with manageable access. Participants should be comfortable carrying their equipment over snowy or uneven ground. Walking distances and locations will be adapted to winter conditions.

  • This workshop works well for enthusiastic beginners through advanced photographers.

    You don’t need to be an expert, but it helps if you’re comfortable with basic camera controls (aperture, shutter speed, ISO). We’ll meet you where you are and help you improve your technique and confidence.
